Dinosaur Lapbook!

Dinosaurs, So many questions about them so few answers. One thing on my 6 year old sons mind is- Did they really exist? We decided upon a Dinosaur Lapbook to help come to a conclusion with much help from the Free Templates and Mini books at Home School Share. A ton of helpful information but also from the Huge Freebie Dinosaurs Lapbook at Live and Learn. Here are the photos and lapbook, he learned alot and so did I. Most interesting to him was the size and the word Coprolite- Oh yes look it up!

I found a bag full of Dinosaurs at the Thrift Store and we were set to recreate History! (maybe, because, you see, my Einstein is still not totally convinced)

Water Cycle Lapbook

Here is an experiment from our Water Cycle Lapbook. This proves that plants absorbs water through its veins. We put blue (red would have been better) food coloring in a jar added a stalk of celery. Then we watched the blue water climb up the stalk, at some point we couldn't take it anymore and broke the stalk to SEE the process, quite an exciting process for my son. He learned alot! And enjoyed it! We took resources from more places then I can remember. I start collecting our resources and copying papers etc, about 3months or more in advance so when the time comes we can just dive into it. Below are a few links and references for you to follow. Thrift Store Find!!

This is a beautiful vintage ( 80's radio) I found at a local thrift store. Its pink! What comes to mind? Cindi Lauper? Roxanne, Roxanne? Darryl and Oates(?) ? I know one of them did:} it works great and was only $1.15! (1/2 off coupon) Obviously no one but me would appreciate a find like this because I saw it at the store not once but twice (the first times I had on my logical thinking cap- the you don't really need this one) and the third time I grabbed it and never looked back! Now I'm on the hunt for more tapes to help me create in my studio what Louie Armstrong, (check), Ink Spots, (check), Rudy Vallee and his Gentleman Songsters (check)! Hey if you create with vintage emphemera, its only right to submerge yourself totally down to the checkered knickers and specs!;)

So Ready for Fall

I'm ready, I'm ready!! So ready for the fall to fall in here in the (almost) Midwest. I cooked Chilli today and that's a sure sign that fall is on its way. I love turtlenecks and suede, boots and sweaters, socks and leather purses. All the things I put away reluctantly each spring. I must say it doesn't take much passing of time here in Michigan before its time to pull all these wares back out. I'm feeling the urge to change my decor , and exchange my bright fake flowers gracing my table with dried grape vines, fall leaves and wreaths. Time for new (old) drapes and furniture rearranging and actually cooking with a shopping list in hand to make good old fashioned meals for a family that'll gather around the table, eat together, talk together undistracted from the heat. Yes the Fall is for me. I feel a surge in energy for schooling and a overwhelming nesting instinct that settles upon me just in time to rearrange the house for the cold days ahead. I'm ready to wash quilts and dust off blankets and resist the urge to weather proof the windows just yet. Womanly instincts, yes its a beautiful thing...

I've been in a serious creative rut lately. I look at all my goodies, I've accumulated and quickly turn my head so as to hide the shame I feel in having not touched any of the things I just "had to have". **sighs** I have a few items I've almost completed just a few finishing touches, one last thing to glue down here, one more tap there, one last button over yonder and they will be all ready to go on to the world wide web! Yeah right, I then have take a picture of it, download it to my computer, measure it, define it , post it and promote it. Is it any wonder the daunting task of creating is slowed down, no, completely halted? But I'll get back on track and oh boy, when I do...I'm working on it I think I'll be for the rest of this system of things a WIP! I must stop procrastinating and start doing today what I shouldn't put off until.......etc, etc,...

When I decided to homeschool almost ten years ago, I wasn't aware of the Montessori method. I wish I had known. The method is wonderful for most of us right brain folks, especially in a world set up for left brainers. It uses many manipulatives and concrete objects to make the lessons stick. I have a good friend who is a certified Montessori teacher for the primary grades and she was instrumental in showing me the ropes to school my 5 year old. My girls although older benefitted as well, I incorporated many of Maria Montessori ideas and methods in their already eclectic curriculum. My friend took us on a tour of her school and we got chance to get some ideas from their set-up. The Montessori method for Homeschoolers is definitely do-able, fun, affordable and it gets results. Meet Noah. My son and myself's creation. He is made of polymer clay with moveable arms, hand, legs and head. He made an ark with Daddy first and of course looked to me to make the people to go in the ark. We first softened the polymer clay, rolled his limbs , shaped his torso, pieced them together with wire. My son sculpted his face (look at those eyes) and we baked him. We used Sculpey so 275 degrees for about 15 and cool in the oven. Here also is a pic of him before we baked him and of course after. Its good to do fun things that have nothing to do with the lesson you're on in school. Just for the fun of it. Now Mrs. Noah and the other may be a long time in coming for it took awhile to get him done! But here he is finished and fully clothed with a few of his passengers in tow. We'll soon be doing a lapbook on this subject, I'll be sure post pics for you to see, maybe get a few ideas from. Even if you're not homeschooling its still good just to sit down and do fun things with the kids. Mrs. Noah coming one day...

At certain times of the year I get this feverish Homeschooling feeling and spend quite a bit of time. Planning, reorganizing, breaking down, constructing and deconstructing our plan. You know- the perfect one from last semester. Well this year, I'm using Homeschooltracker. From homeschooltracker.com it is a FREE HS tracking software. And it really is quite awesome. And did I mention its FREE? If I like it I'll upgrade to plus for a fee, still worth it I'm sure. We are starting Lapbooks and I'll be sure to share that with you as soon as the first is complete! I'll be adding some fantastic links that you'll find helpful no doubt. Taking advantage of this weather, we're going to be trying to venture outside more and for this I've made them Field Journals~made from completely recycled material, stitched and bound, with clear pockets for inserting the days finds. They'll be in the store~Stella's soon:) No doubt you'll find them most useful for your Adventurers too. Or for the Wild Wonderer in yourself!

My 5 year old and I attempted to recycled crayons, we have a ton of them and thought it'd be fun. Well I learned a couple of things here! One thing is all crayons do not melt to the same consistency! Crayola (national brand) melted the best and with even consistency, the others (the few they give you at restaurants to occupy the kids) just sat there. Didn't even budge. I bought a bag full of ancient cookie cutters and decorating tips from a thrift store some time ago. I knew one day would come in handy. I'll have to point that out to hubby!:0 -Not everything I purchase without an immediate explanation is useless. Any how we had fun making it them again it is the Process not the Product, Right? Hmm, what can I get into now? Next weeks project: Handmade Paper using last week's crayon wrappers;)
